French officials have consented to start stopping small boats in the Channel, after months of insistence from the United Kingdom.

This policy shift follows the British leader wrote to the French leader asking him to back the plan and stating there presently "lack any effective preventive measure" in the maritime passage.

French maritime police have been authorized to stop the small boats at sea, but only before they've picked up their passengers, according to authoritative statements.

French authorities have infrequently intervened to stop the heavily loaded boats leaving the coastline because it is considered too great a danger to both officers and individuals.

"It is essential that we implement these methods this period... We have no effective deterrent in the Channel."

Currently, a French maritime police spokesperson says officers will begin intervening at sea, with the objective of safeguarding lives.

Notably, the official excluded the use of entanglement devices to stop boats, which had previously been suggested as a potential technique to disable the propellers of the boats.

The decision to take action at all is a major step forward, coming after a short-lived change towards a more aggressive strategy this summer, which ceased when the former government official left government.

That was highlighted in July, in the run-up to a summit between the Prime Minister and President, when French police were observed walking into the sea to damage the sides of a boat.

Currently French authorities will once more be allowed to stop boats prior to they collect migrant passengers from the coastal areas of northern France, although it's uncertain how the small boats will be prevented.

Strong winds are presently postponing the commencement of intervention operations and the people-smuggling networks will be seeking ways to adapt to evade detection, as they have done so often in the previous instances.

UK immigration authorities and Downing Street have been approached for comment.
